Accessed by the San Juan Skyway, the town of Silverton is best known as one of the locations of the iconic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Travelers can savor stunning views of the canyons and cliffs on this coal-fired, steam-powered train. Backpackers have long traversed through the Weminuche Wilderness near Silverton, and it’s also a desirable destination for rafting, mountain biking, and fishing. In winter months, Silverton Mountain beckons skiers with a sense of adventure. There is one lift and other terrain is accessible by hiking, for advanced and expert skiing only. Ridgeline hikes to access terrain range from 5-45 minutes. Guided and non-guided skiing is available, and beacons are recommended.
